Summer has officially started, and with that comes the likes of beaches, barbecues, and our topic of the day: wedding season. At Ustream, we’ve seen a huge uptick in wedding webcasts, as an increasing number of couples nowadays are weaving technology into their wedding planning. In fact, nearly 20 thousand streaming weddings have been broadcast on the Ustream live platform over the last 12 months. Not only that, but we expect the numbers to keep climbing as well.

Check out the infograph below for more numbers. Wedding planners and videographers are well aware of the growing trend, as they realize the opportunity to further expand their offerings. If you are a first time broadcasters, though, and want some generally applicable advice please read our 5 Pro Tips for Live Video Production before your first live stream.

Wedding Day.. and streaming as easy as 1, 2, 3

Broadcasting a wedding can be easier than you think. That said, if you haven’t checked out our 5 Pro Tips for Live Video Production, one thing to keep in mind is the importance of the connection. It’s suggested to have an upload speed about twice what you plan to broadcast at. This can sometimes be a struggle for more rural wedding locations. Possible solutions can be mobile hot spots or other technology to get a stronger Internet signal to where you will be broadcasting from. Be sure to check your speed at the actual location you plan to broadcast at. Be mindful of other variables as well. For example if it’s a shared connection, be aware that other guests at the wedding might be using it during the ceremony.

Don’t know your connection speed? Take this quick speed test to find out.

The other nugget of information is that you will want to test, test test before your broadcast. Sign up for the Ustream live platform early and do a sample broadcast with as much of the same setup as possible. Same camera, same encoder, same computer if applicable and if possible the same connection speed. This can give you an idea of what the workflow will be like and also allows for you to correct for things before the special day.
